English summary: Do we really need a theory for the successful study of geomorphological processes? Are potentially dangerous processes such as landslides not already well understood? These questions about the basic theoretical assumptions of the discipline stir the self-understanding of geomorphology, whose representatives are often known to be averse to distinctive theory. But how well is a science doing, in which the theoretical works are the exception? Can't geomorphology at last profit from a robust debate with its theoretical assumptions? The theoretical space for geomorphological work will not only be expanded, but new spaces marked out and above all, also make interdisciplinary compatible areas. This work was honored with the 2012 Dissertation Prize of the German Working Group for Geomorphology (the DGfG), the 2012 Hans Bobek Prize of the Austrian Geographic Society (ÖGC), and the 2011 Springer Thesis Prize.
